When I found out that I had been selected to work as the Kids Program Coordinator at The Light and Leadership Initiative, a mixture of excitement and uncertainty washed over me regarding how the coming months with the organization would unfold. The initial days and weeks were crucial in gaining a closer look at the remarkable work my team carries out. I delved deeper into the history of the Kids Program, the Women’s Program, Huaywasi (the project with women artisans), their impressive growth over their 14 years of operation, and the challenges they faced due to the pandemic. Since 2009, LLI has been collaborating with the Huaycán community to transform the lives of women and children, providing them with expanded educational opportunities so they can become leaders in their own development and that of their families.
These four months of working at LLI have not only exceeded my expectations but have also allowed me to become a part of an amazing team of women, to get to know boys and girls aged 7 to 12 who are eager to learn, and to connect with families who are deeply appreciative and engaged in this educational process. Below, I’d like to share more about this experience, particularly how LLI contributes to education in the Huaycán community on a daily basis and how I have been fortunate to become a part of this great initiative.
On Saturday, April 22nd, it was my first day on-site at the educational center located in Huaycán. That day marked the sixth day of extracurricular classes in Cycle 2 of the Kids Program. Yeni, the interim coordinator, introduced me to the boys and girls, the volunteer teachers, and the families. On the same day, in the afternoon, the Cycle 2 Parents’ Meeting took place. I remember how special it was to introduce myself to the parents and the warm welcome I received from them. Strong applause filled the classroom as soon as I finished my presentation, instantly showing their gratitude and commitment to working with me.
During this period, I’ve had the opportunity to closely observe the dynamics and responsibilities of the program. This reflection has allowed me to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Among these, I want to emphasize the commitment of both the volunteers and the families in the Huaycán community.
Cycle 3 concluded on August 26th, featuring the participation of five volunteers specializing in Mathematics, Technology, English, and Art. Over the course of 10 weeks, these volunteers conducted their classes with remarkable dedication and responsibility. They adapted to the resources and materials available within the organization and worked diligently to create dynamic and interactive lessons for the children. Their commitment extended beyond the one or two hours of in-person teaching per week, as they also took on the task of developing lesson plans.
While my primary role involves supervising volunteers, organizing activities, and working on new program projects, Cycle 3 of 2023 provided me with the wonderful opportunity to step into the role of a teacher for two workshops: the Reading Club and Reading Comprehension. Teaching is all about providing a powerful tool that enables children to grow, discover, innovate, and find joy in life’s experiences.
In this setting, my goal was to help children explore their passions and discover sources of confidence and joy through carefully selected texts and books. Building strong and close bonds with the community has been essential throughout this process, not only with the children in the program but also with their families, who play a fundamental role in enabling their participation in these extracurricular workshops.
Throughout my journey in the Kids Program, new ideas and projects have emerged that we plan to implement in the short and medium term. Our primary objective, in collaboration with the LLI team, has been to identify and implement improvements to the Kids Program. These improvements encompass the use of appropriate technology, visual aids, educational materials, and enhancements to our infrastructure. Additionally, we’ve introduced motivational and engagement strategies, including involving parents in classes, recognizing responsible students, and exploring new academic approaches.
The LLI team has worked tirelessly to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our donors, to whom we are immensely grateful. However, this experience has also prompted us to reevaluate and strengthen many processes. We are committed to furthering educational opportunities for our children in Huaycán, not only in terms of academic skills but also in nurturing their creativity, socio-emotional development, and reinforcement of their values.
I’m enthusiastic about what I’ve learned thus far and eagerly anticipate achieving new goals. I have no doubt that this experience in the Kids Program is transforming my perspective on education, my professional journey, and my overall human experience.

Construyendo y Creciendo: trabajando por la educación de las niñas y niños de Huaycán
Cuando me enteré que había sido elegida para trabajar en The Light and Leadership Initiative como Coordinadora del Programa de Niños, me invadió la emoción y la incertidumbre sobre cómo se iban a llevar a cabo los siguientes meses en la organización. Los primeros días y semanas fueron fundamentales para entender más de cerca la extraordinaria labor que desarrolla mi equipo. Empecé a conocer más la historia del Programa de Niños, del Programa de Mujeres, de Huaywasi (proyecto con mujeres artesanas), de su crecimiento exponencial en sus 14 años de funcionamiento y de los obstáculos que atravesaron debido a la pandemia. Desde el 2009, LLI viene trabajando junto a la comunidad de Huaycán para transformar la vida de mujeres y niños, dándoles mayores oportunidades de educación en donde puedan ser los líderes de su desarrollo y el de sus familias.
Estos cuatro meses de trabajo en LLI , no solo han sobrepasado mis expectativas, sino que me han permitido formar parte de un equipo de mujeres increíbles, conocer a niños y niñas de 7 a 12 años con muchas ganas de aprender y familias totalmente agradecidas e involucradas con este proceso educativo. A continuación quisiera que conozcan un poco más de esta experiencia, especialmente en cómo LLI contribuye diariamente con la educación en la comunidad de Huaycán y cómo he logrado sumarme a esta gran iniciativa.
El sábado 22 de abril fue mi primer día presencial en el centro educativo ubicado en Huaycán. Ese día se estaba realizando la sexta jornada de clases extracurriculares del Ciclo 2 del Programa de Niños. Yeni, la coordinadora interim, se encargó de presentarme a los niños y niñas, a las profesoras voluntarias y a las familias. Ese mismo día, en la tarde, se realizó la Reunión de Padres del Ciclo 2. Recuerdo lo especial que fue presentarme a los padres y el caluroso recibimiento que tuve por parte de ellos. Fuertes aplausos resonaron en el aula apenas terminé mi presentación, por lo que en un instante me demostraron que estaban agradecidos y comprometidos en trabajar conmigo.
En este tiempo he podido conocer más de cerca las dinámicas y responsabilidades del Programa. Ello me ha permitido reflexionar sobre sus fortalezas y debilidades. Entre ellas me gustaría destacar el compromiso de los voluntarios y las familias de la comunidad de Huaycán. El 26 de agosto finalizó el Ciclo 3. En este tiempo se contó con la participación de cinco voluntarios en las áreas de Matemática, Tecnología, Inglés y Arte. Durante 10 semanas, nuestros voluntarios desarrollaron sus sesiones de clases con mucha motivación y responsabilidad. Se han sabido adecuar a los recursos y materiales que tiene la organización y se han esforzado por proponer clases dinámicas e interactivas para los niños. Generalmente, ellos no solo le dedican una o dos horas de dictado presencial a la semana, sino que también se encargan de crear las sesiones de clases.
Si bien mi principal rol es supervisar el trabajo de los voluntarios, organizar las actividades y trabajar en los nuevos proyectos del Programa, en el Ciclo 3 del 2023 tuve la grata experiencia de ser profesora de dos talleres: Club de Lectura y Comprensión lectora. Enseñar es brindar una herramienta poderosa que les permita a los niños y niñas crecer, descubrir, innovar y disfrutar de las experiencias de la vida. En este espacio quise contribuir a que los niños y niñas puedan descubrir qué les apasiona, qué les transmite seguridad y alegría a partir de textos y libros escogidos especialmente para ellos. Ha sido muy importante que en este proceso se formen vínculos fuertes y cercanos con la comunidad, no solo con los niños del Programa, sino con sus familias que son actores fundamentales para que los niños puedan participar de estos talleres extracurriculares.
Por último, en este recorrido por el Programa de Niños han surgido nuevas ideas y proyectos que se quieren implementar a un corto y mediano plazo. Uno de los objetivos principales, junto al equipo LLI, ha sido identificar y brindar mejoras al Programa de Niños, tales como el uso de tecnología apropiada, herramientas visuales, materiales educativos y adecuación de la infraestructura. Asimismo, se han implementado nuestras estrategias de motivación y participación como el involucramiento de los padres de familia a las clases, el reconocimiento de alumnos responsables y la búsqueda de nuevas estrategias académicas.
El equipo de LLI ha trabajado mucho por resurgir ante los difíciles momentos de la pandemia, pero ello no habría sido posible sin la colaboración de nuestros donantes, de los cuales estamos muy agradecidos. No obstante, esto ha permitido repensar muchos procesos que requieren ser potenciados y modificados. Se espera seguir contribuyendo a las oportunidades de educación de nuestros niños en Huaycán, pero no solo a partir de las habilidades académicas, sino también desde las creativas, socioemocionales y el refuerzo de sus valores.
Estoy muy emocionada por lo que he aprendido hasta hoy y a la expectativa de conseguir nuevas metas. No me cabe duda que esta experiencia en el Programa de Niños está transformando mi visión sobre la educación, mi trayectoria profesional y mi experiencia humana.
